Rural Minds Come Together in Connectivity Seminar
Dairy Research Foundation’s Symposium 2012, July 5-6 Camden NSW
The Dairy Research Foundation Symposium was held from July 5-6 in Camden NSW. I was lucky enough to be living close by in the Gold Coast which allowed me to drop my cap and goggles, take a break from triathlon training and whip down south for a short three day stint.
This was a welcome distraction from job hunting which had been taking up the majority of my waking hours. The opportunity for me to finally see some agricultural land, talk to some farmers and learn a bit as well was perfectly placed for this.
Farming information at your fingertips!
Brief description: This application is a New Zealand created information resource for farmers. The information provided covers a range of nine different agricultural related “knowledge packs”, which collectively can assist with a total of 67 different farm-related tasks. Released in early August, this application has had a good download response with between 100 to 500 downloads on the Google Play App store.
Developer: Baletwine Ltd.
Type: Farm information resource.
Cost: Initially free, additional fees for access to entire app content.
LIC Farm Technology: Protrack Drafter
Recent publications suggest that dairy services provider LIC is well and truly at the forefront of technological agriculture development. Chairman Murray King indicated (in an article written by Alan Williams, in the February 18 issue of ‘The New Zealand Farmers Weekly’) that demand for product and services from dairy farmers has lifted across all operating segments in the first half of the trading year.
LIC Farm Technology
“MINDA” farm software by LIC (Livestock Improvement Corp) has been the launch pad for innovative technological developments to the agricultural market since its initial release in 2001. The original “MINDAlink” software was created to manage the dairy herd using desktop computers (PC’s); everything from breeding to livestock treatments could be recorded on the software.
OneFarm Android App release!
Attention all dairy farmers! Hopefully OneFarm has caught your gaze by releasing its first smartphone application (app) in a timely fashion right before the busiest period of year. Grass2Milk is its name and as the name suggests it is a tool for assisting with the conversion of grass into the white gold we call milk. How exactly does it do this?
Mind your pasture with MINDA Pasture
LIC has released another smartphone application, this time targeted at assisting dairy farmers with pasture and feed management. MINDA Pasture enables users to throw away the old notebook and record all their pasture walk information directly onto their phone.
New online livestock sales website
I hate to say it, but it looks like many places in the country are in drought like conditions. As a farmer, or someone who cares for agricultural livestock, you generally have two options in these conditions where grass or crop growth is so minimal that the subsequent “food” barely hits the sides of your usually high performing milk and meat producing stock. So, what can you do? Either ration your supplements, buy in more (usually at a ridiculous price) or alternatively sell those excess or not so high performing beasts.
Farm menus, a resource to keep NZ farmers up with the play
According to a recent report by Beecham Research Ltd, the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the UN (FAO) predicts that the global population will reach 8 billion people by 2025 and 9.6 billion by 2050. For the world’s food producers to feed this number of people, food production must increase by 70 percent by 2050.
New Zealand Dairy Data Standards
Rezare Systems has been working with New Zealand agricultural industry players; mainly DairyNZ, MPI through the PGP and FarmIQ Systems; to develop “dairy industry network data standards”. It seems this work is largely in response to a general trend in farming become more data-rich and somewhat data overloaded.
New Zealand Farm Management Information Systems - Who are the players and what are they offering: Part 1
I recently read an article in Rural News titled “Data everywhere-but how to use it?” To sum-it up in a few sentences, it was about; you guessed it, farm data collection, processing and interpretation. Comments from Hayden Lawrence, a Taranaki dairy farmer and business owner who has a PhD in precision agriculture, provided insight and one very probing challenge to farmers which was to “get your digital house in order”.
Aquaflex - designed to improve your irrigation efficiency
Aquaflex developed in conjunction with Lincoln University and Streat Instruments is a technology that is increasingly useful. With changing environmental regulations, the recent droughts throughout New Zealand and the changing economic environment Aquaflex can aid in improving on farm economic and environmental efficiency.
What is Aquaflex and how does it work?
A 3D Dairy education
A new initiative from DairyNZ has been launched to try to bridge the gap between urban and rural Kiwis’ understanding of New Zealand’s agricultural story. Increasing media awareness of the agriculture industry (often dairy) within NZ has highlighted how broad this gap can be.
iAgri
iAgri have developed a great whole farm management package which is suitable for all farm businesses. They offer a very comprehensive suite of financial and production management tools which are relatively easy to use. iAgri Diary includes the more practical on-farm management tools such as feed budgeting, stock information (milk production, liveweights, health treatments and the like). Farm paddocks are mapped onto a satellite image of the farm and activities such fertiliser applications, irrigation and pest and disease control are then recorded for easy future reference.

iPayroll
iPayroll is an online payroll service that is very popular with businesses in New Zealand. It is a cost-effective option, even for small farm businesses wanting to simplify how they pay staff salaries. Employers enter the timesheet information, pay rate and tax code and iPayroll will generate a payslip and automatically pay the staff member and IRD, as well as deduct any Kiwisaver contributions. Staff can also view their payslip online, something I appreciated doing on my last dairy farm job.

pureFarming
pureFarming is a web-based animal recording tool developed by Rezare Systems. The Rezare team develops software to improve whole farm management, including Farmax and Overseer. Being web-based means there is no requirement to download any software if using a desktop computer, although internet connectivity is required. The pureFarming tool imports data from Gallagher, Iconix, TruTest and Donald EID readers.
